The Just Shall Live By Faith

Every day and every hour, you and I make decision on the things we say and do. Do I complain about how I feel?  Do I say a word of encouragement to her?  Do I refrain from doing that which might not look right?  Do I refrain from using certain words that would hurt?  Do I help someone in need?  Do I open the door for someone?  Do I give someone a smile?  Do I boast to others of the good deeds I have done?  Do I pray often during the day?  Do I go to the church assembly?  You and I make hundreds of decisions every day on how we live our lives.  As believers and followers of Jesus Christ, our decisions will be guided by what we believe that Jesus would have us do.  Matt 16:24 ‘Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.”’  We call ourselves Christians because we are disciples of Jesus Christ and live as he teaches us to live.  He said “A new command I give you:  Love one another” (John 13:34) so we live our lives having love for each other.  He said to forgive, so we forgive.  He said to deny ourselves, so we deny ourselves.  All of his teachings and that of his apostles who followed after him then become guidance for the decisions we make in our lives.  Our lives are shaped because of our faith in God and his son Jesus Christ.  Habakkuk 2:4b “The just shall live by faith”.  (See also Rom 1:17, Gal 3:11, Heb 10:38).  Simply put, we do what our faith tells us to do.  There are times that I go to a foreign country and find myself in situations where I am uncomfortable.  But since I am living by faith, I say a prayer to God like this:  “Father, I am not comfortable in this situation.  But I am doing what I believe you want me to do.  Please guide me and protect me.”  And so I walk on in faith.  And then there are other times in my every day life when I wonder if what I am getting ready to do is right or not.  Rom 14:23 “But the man who has doubts is condemned … and everything that does not come from faith is sin.”  We live by faith for the things we do and for the things we don’t do.  As Christians, we must have the Holy Spirit within us (Romans 8:9).  Since we live by faith, we then listen to this Spirit within us and let him lead us in our lives in the decisions that we make.  Rom 8:14 “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”  Hebrews chapter 11 contains a long list of people who lived their lives in faith.  Heb 12:1-3 “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.”
