Belief In God

Why do you believe in God?  Have you just always believed in God?  Do you believe because your parents taught you to believe?  The world around us tells us that there is no God and that the earth and everything in it evolved from the cosmos.  Let me tell you some reasons why I believe.

I believe because of what God has created.  Romans 1:18-20 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them.  For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.”  God’s wisdom and power can clearly be seen from what He has created.  Psalm 19:1-3 “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.  Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge.  There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard.”

The wonderful design of what God has created causes me to believe.  The earth is just the right distance from the sun for warmth and cool.  The magnetosphere shields us from harmful particles from the sun.  The atmosphere provides oxygen for us to breathe.  The oxygen – carbon dioxide cycle provides renewable carbon dioxide for plants and necessary oxygen for people and animals.  The water cycle of rain provides necessary water for plants and animals.  The oceans provide wonderful resources for mankind.  The moon creates the tides and provides balance for the earth and light at night.  The seasons assist in the annual renewal of life.  There is beauty all around us in wonderful creatures and plants.  Look at the beauty of birds to include the peacock.  Look at the beauty of flowers to include the rose.  Look at the design of us as human beings.  We have all of our organs that allow us to exist and function so wonderfully; we run, play, digest food, think and speak because of how we are wonderfully designed.  For me, my faith is strengthened by the discoveries they have made in recent years of how a cell divides and how the information is coded in the DNA that defines all of our characteristics.  All of these demonstrate the design of the creator.  I do not believe that these things happened as a result of random chance from the chaos of a big bang.  In my training as an engineer, I was taught the second law of thermodynamics which basically states that all systems go from order to disorder and never from disorder to order.  And yet, people today would try to convince us that the design in everything we see about us evolved from the disorder caused by the “big bang”.

I believe in God because of Jesus.  He was not an imaginary person but an historic figure.  He went around performing miracles such as feeding large groups of people with a small amount of bread and fish.  John the Baptist sent his disciples to Jesus to ask if He was the one they were looking for.  Jesus responded in Luke 7:22 “Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.’”  The Jewish and Roman authorities were opposed to Jesus but they couldn’t deny the miracles that he performed.   Jesus restored sight to a man that was born blind.  This is what that man said.  John 9:32-33 “Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind. If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing.”  The miracles that Jesus performed proved that He was God on earth; He is the Word.  John 1:14 “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”   Then Jesus was crucified by the Roman authorities.  This was not a fake, but a proven death.  When He came to life again three days later, as He had foretold, it proved again the power of God and gives us hope in our own resurrection from the dead.  What Jesus was able to do gives me reason to believe in God.

Unbelievers choose to not believe in God.  They suppress the truth about God and his creation because they don’t want to believe.  If there is a God who created us all, then this God would have a reason for us to exist and would have principles and commands that we are to obey.  But they don’t want to submit themselves to God – they want to do what they want to do with their lives.  They want to enjoy sexual immorality.  They want to fulfill the lusts of their flesh and the lust of their eyes.  They want to prove themselves better than others.  They want to please themselves.  Romans 1:21-22 “Because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools.”  The Bible suggests that the god of this age has blinded unbelievers.  2 Corinthians 4:3-4 “But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.”

I submit to you that the evidence for God’s existence is overwhelming for those who have eyes to see.  We cannot see God because He is Spirit, but we can see the evidence of His existence by looking at what He has made.  Jesus proved He was from God the Father by the miracles that He performed.  I encourage you to strengthen your belief in God.  Let that belief turn into faith with works that are consistent with your belief in God.  Live your life by faith.  Hebrews 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
