We are given the story of blind Bartimaeus in Mark 10:46-52 “Now they came to Jericho. As He went out of Jericho with His disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the road begging. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Then many warned him to be quiet; but he cried out all the more, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’ So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called. Then they called the blind man, saying to him, ‘Be of good cheer. Rise, He is calling you.’ And throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus. So Jesus answered and said to him, ‘What do you want Me to do for you?’ The blind man said to Him, ‘Rabboni, that I may receive my sight.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Go your way; your faith has made you well.’ And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road.”
I think good eyesight is truly a blessing from God. With sight, I can see and know what is happening some distance away from my body. I can see the faces of the people I love. I can see all the colors that God has given us in His creation, from beautful flowers, to brilliantly colored birds, to the blue of the sky on a clear day. I can also see the detail of things I can hold in my hands. I can see to read the Bible. I can see the stars and the planets in the sky. Good eyesight is truly a blessing. Perhaps you don’t have good eyesight and you wish that your sight was better. Whatever eyesight you have, thank God for giving you physical sight.
I want to see Jesus. We do not live in the first century when Jesus walked upon the earth, so we do not physically see him or know what he looks like. Now we must see Him by faith. Some day we will see Him face to face. Revelation 1:7 “Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.” There will be a day when we will see Jesus. 1 John 3:1-3 “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.” I want to see Jesus and thank Him for what He has done for me!
I want to see God. Matthew 5:8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” When we arrive at the Holy City of God, we will live with God and see His face. Revelation 22:1-4 “And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads.” I want to see the face of God and fall down before Him in worship.
I want to see the next step I need to take. It might be nice to know what happens in the future in my life, but I have faith that God has control of what happens in my life and I want to accept whatever He brings and trust Him that all things will work together for my good if I love Him (Romans 8:28). But I do want to see what I should do next. What step should I take? What decisions should I make? God’s word helps me see the next step. Psalms 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” When I am led by the Spirit and ask God for wisdom (James 1:5), I believe the next step will be given for me to see.
Just as physical eyesight is important, spiritual eyesight is also important. Jesus told John to write to the church of the Laodiceans in Revelation 3:15-18 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’ — and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked — I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.” The church at Laodicea was blind. They thought that they were rich and wealthy and needed nothing but instead they were wretched, miserable, poor and naked. They did not see their pitiful spiritual state. I want to see my spiritual state – my spiritual health. Am I spiritually healthy or spiritually sick? Am I spiritually wealthy or spiritually poor? Pray to God to show you your spiritual state of being.
I want to have the eyes of my understanding enlightened so that I can spiritually see what God has going for me. Paul prayed for the church in Ephesians 1:15-19 “Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power.” I want my spiritual eyes to be enlightened to spiritually see the hope of His calling, the riches of His inheritance, and the exceeding greatness of His power for me.
I pray that you will have good physical eyesight in your life. But more importantly, I pray that God will give you good spiritual eyesight so that you will see your true spiritual condition, good or bad. I also pray that you will see what God has going for you as His beloved child.
